WHAT ARE AWNING WINDOWS?
Set on a vertical hinge, normally at the top, these windows are a type of casement, that opens up to the outside and are very common above sinks, especially in kitchens. But they will also benefit you during snowstorms — which average over 3 feet in Wisconsin — because their strong seal keeps the cold air and snow out of your home.
WHY CHOOSE AWNING WINDOWS?
Awning windows are often used as double windows set next to each other, and you can use a hand crank to open them up and down. This includes Pella’s locking system, which pulls the window sash up and in, fastening it tightly against the weatherstripping to create a seal. They also have a double sash.

Is it better to have awning or casement windows?
Awning and casement windows each have their own advantages. The benefits of an awning window are easier access to window accessories like flower boxes, better protection, two or more pair well and its great for hard to fit spaces like basement windows. The benefits of casement windows are unobstructed views, simpler cleaning, ample ventilation, and the fact that they are ideal for small spaces.
What is the difference between awning windows and hopper windows?
The difference between an awning window and a hopper window is the direction the sash swings and the placement of the hings. Awning windows have a sash that swings outward from the bottom, with the hinge at the top. Hopper windows have a sash that swings inward from the top, with a hinge at the bottom.
Can an awning window open 90 degrees?
Yes. Pella's awning windows have a release that allows you to tilt to 90 degrees to allow maximum airflow and easier cleaning. Pella also offers a locking mechanism that restricts the opening to 4 inches if security is a priority.
Can an awning window open inward?
Not normally unless they are custom awning windows. Awning windows are normally designed with a sash that opens outward from the bottom. Hopper windows have a sash that opens inward from the top.
