WHAT ARE SINGLE-HUNG WINDOWS?

The single-hung, also known as single-sash, window is made up of two pieces, or sashes. The bottom piece can slide up and down, while the top piece is fixed. It is set vertically, creating a rectangular frame with a locking mechanism in the middle on top of the lower sash. This means you can open the bottom piece of the window to allow airflow, but the top piece remains anchored.

WHY CHOOSE SINGLE-HUNG WINDOWS?

This simple, compact solution can work well for both a Wisconsin farmhouse and a Wisconsin city home. It offers an excellent price point, easy installation, and with fewer openings and moving parts, fewer opportunities for heat or cold to escape, making them slightly more energy efficient.

Single-hung windows have many similarities to double-hung windows such as their ability to create airflow in your home, their simplicity, and their affordability. Their biggest differences, though, are that single-hung are typically less expensive than double-hung, they are simpler to install (because there are fewer moving parts), and they are better at keeping the outdoor elements outside because of the top sash being immovable—giving it a stronger seal.

PELLA WISCONSIN REVIEWS

Hear about how we’ve helped tens of thousands in Wisconsin.

qoutes

“Jake came out and gave us a consultation, explained the different options we had for windows. Our home has been around since the late 1800s and we definitely needed new windows! The crew showed up on time, and killed it! They were very professional, courteous of our home, clean and just did a great job! We went for a modern black fiberglass window with a big grid… and I am in LOVE!”

“Fantastic experience working with Pella, we’re so happy with how our windows turned out! I worked with Matt from the start and it was an easy process (not the cheesy strung-out sales pitches like most companies) with good communication. We got all new good work and changed some window designs, which was a big project for the size of our windows. The crew who installed them did an impeccable job and were very fast.”

“Tim did a fantastic job. He was very  honest and knowledgeable and asked what we wanted and what our goals were for the windows and the house. No upselling and he was not pushy at all. I  felt like we got a great quality product at a great price. I also feel really good about their install process which a lot of other companies do not talk about. We definitely will be calling Tim when we need more windows at this house or the next.”

SINGLE-HUNG WINDOW FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Single-hung windows are an older style of window that the double-hung window has been increasingly replacing, but they are still available and there is still some demand.

Single-hung windows do have some benefits. They are typically less expensive than double-hung windows. They are more energy-efficient, making them better at keeping heat inside your home during cold winters and keeping heat out of your home during hot, humid Wisconsin summers. They are sometimes not quite as easy to clean, and they don’t offer the same airflow flexibility as double-hung windows.

Single-hung windows can come in any of the grid styles, or grilles, available for double-hung. These include a farmhouse, Victorian, prairie, 6-lite prairie, craftsman and colonial, to name just a few.
